The route is very similar to last year. There is only one change. the Japanese Canadian memorial close to Beacon Hill Park was added.  The plan was for it to be completed by now. They have had the grand opening, but are finishing the landscaping and leaving the fencing up. We have left it as a control because of its importance and that riders have an awareness of where they can return to view it.

The route is straightforward.  The roads are in decent condition with construction taking place at various points along the way.

The following are exerpts from the pre-ride report sent to me.

  • East Saanich Rd. Starting at 9.3 km. Single lane traffic with gravel patches. Possibly two lanes on Nov 11.
  • Happy Valley Rd at ~79Km. Single lane traffic
  • Dallas Rd closed at Memorial Crescent (102.1) but you can go around it on the sidewalk. Continue through the closure barricades and pylons at 101.5 (Moss St) and 101.7 (Clover Point). The road is open for local traffic. The construction area is fenced in but the sidewalks are open. Take the sidewalk on the south (waterfront) side and then continue on the Dallas Road bike lane.
  • The Goose is closed between the trestle bridge (144.3) and Tolmie Lane. Note that this is an extension of the closure that has been in effect all year. As Gord and I found out the hard way, the original detour (Jutland-Cecelia-Napier) is no longer viable because the access from Napier is now fenced in. We went to Burnside-Alpha but the correct detour is probably:
  • McNeill Ave (131.8) will probably be open on Nov 11. We were able to get through the closed section on the sidewalk. There will be steel plates and gravel patches.

The Goose detour mentioned in the second last bullet is a moving target. As they finish a section of the trail, they move further down.  The described route is also what is written on the cue sheet and in the gpx file. If it has been moved, follow the detour to get back on the trail.
